Early goals lead Loons past Revs, 2-1

Don't look now MLS Western Conference, but Minnesota United is making a run. Wednesday's 2-1 win over the visiting New England Revolution was the Loons' third in their last four games and second in a row. Minnesota (8-11-1, 25 points) came into the week with three home games in eight days and now stand 7-3-1 at TCF Bank Stadium this year. Minnesota led 2-0 at the break, but New England (7-6-7, 28 points) cut the deficit in half in the 52nd minute when Alexi Gomez was whistled for a poor foul, giving New England a penalty kick. Diego Fagundez converted his seventh goal of the year to make it 2-1. New England nearly tied it in the 80th minute when Scott Caldwell re-directed a cross, but Bobby Shuttleworth came up with a huge save to keep the lead. Less than five minutes into the game, Minnesota took the lead on a Christian Ramirez goal. A long header out of the Minnesota back was misplayed by the New England backline, allowing Ramirez to sneak behind the defense. New England goalie Matt Turner was caught well off his line, and Ramirez made him pay when he chipped Turner from 20 yards out for the 1-0 Minnesota lead. Minnesota made it 2-0 in stoppage time at the end of the first half with an incredible goal from Darwin Quintero -- his fifth in the last four games. Quintero picked up a loose ball at the top of the New England penalty area, then proceeded to beat four New England defenders before hitting a laser to the far post to beat Turner. New England had a pair of big chances in the first half from Caldwell and Gabriel Somi, but Shuttleworth was up to the task both times. --Field Level Media
