Ducks' Bernier left in goal because backup Gibson had diarrhea
On Sunday night, those watching the Calgary Flames hammer Anaheim 8-3 might have wondered why Ducks goaltender Jonathan Bernier was left in the game to suffer all eight goals.
As it turns out, his backup, goalie John Gibson, was dealing with his own personal agony. Head coach Randy Carlyle explained to reporters after the game that Gibson was unavailable to relieve Bernier because he was dealing with the flu and, as a result, diarrhea.
“We had to leave Bernier in the net because (goalie John) Gibson had diarrhea and had the flu all day,” Carlyle told reporters after the game. “It kind of left him hanging high and dry. We wouldn’t normally have never done that to him, but in these situations you can’t put people who are sick into the net.”
Had Gibson been healthy, Carlyle told reporters he would have pulled Bernier after Matt Stajan scored Calgary’s fourth goal in the second period.
RC said Bernier had to go the distance as Gibson had stomach flu. Even invoked the lovely word diarrhea. Would have pulled JB after four.
