Driver ejected and killed in Highway 59 rollover crash identified by Merced coroner
The Merced County Sheriff Coroner’s Office has identified the driver killed in a rollover crash on Highway 59 in Merced County on Monday as 22-year-old Giovanni Pantoja Manzo of Mexico, according to Deputy Alexandra Britton.
California Highway Patrol officers responded to the collision shortly before 6 a.m. along Highway 59 north of McNamara Road. Authorities said the man was driving a 2007 Scion sedan at a high rate of speed south on Highway 59, when the vehicle veered across the northbound lane and onto the shoulder of the road causing the vehicle to roll several times.
According to the CHP, the man was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision and was ejected from the vehicle. According to CHP Officer Eric Zuniga, speed does appear to be factor in the collision which remains under investigation.
