Drew Doughty scores OT goal, sending Canada to first in Group B

SOCHI, Russia — Drew Doughty continued his torrid Olympics, scoring an overtime goal at 2:32 to give Canada a 2-1 win over Finland on Sunday, first in Group B and the No. 3 seed in the medal round.

Doughty snapped a shot past Tuukka Rask from the left circle. It was Doughty’s second of the night. He has four goals in the tournament.

By virtue of the game going to overtime, both Finland and Canada lost a chance to gain the No. 1 seed in the medal round. Instead, Canada could face the Swiss and Team USA before reaching the gold-medal game.

Finland kept the Canada offense quiet, playing a trapping style of defense that limited their own shots to 14. They entered the game with 91 shots on goal in their first two games.

Canada got on the board first, in the opening period. Doughty took the puck in the left circle, waited, and then fired a shot into the top left corner of the net for the power-play goal at 13:24, from Shea Weber and Sidney Crosby.

Finland got the equalizer late in the second period, resuscitating a dead crowd. Ossi Vaananen blasted a shot from the point; Tuomo Ruutu fought off a Marc-Edouard Vlasic check to tip it past Carey Price.

The first period featured two near-misses for Team Canada. Rick Nash was involved in a bizarre sequence in which a Tuukka Rask save sent the puck on top of the mesh behind him. Nash hit the net with his stick, bouncing the puck down and behind Rask. The goal was nullified via video review, as Nash’s stick was above the cross bar.

Later, Jonathan Toews made a diving wraparound attempt that slid parallel to the goal line but never crossed it.

In the second period, Jeff Carter had a clear path to the net but put the puck wide. In the third, Toews had another attempt stopped by a perfectly positioned Rask.

The medal round begins on Tuesday with the qualification-round games.
