Drew Brees gave Zion Williamson a signed Saints jersey with a special message on it

Zion Williamson hasn’t played a single second of professional basketball yet, but he’s already being heralded as the future of the New Orleans Pelicans and of New Orleans sports in general. And Drew Brees doesn’t feel disrespected by that at all — in fact, he completely agrees.

The New Orleans Saints quarterback showed how much he believes in Williamson by giving him a special gift. It was waiting for him in his hotel room after he arrived in New Orleans for his introductory news conference.

That video, which features a totally overwhelmed Williamson being surprised by this once-in-a-lifetime gift, only reveals what was on the note from Brees. The note said “Welcome to the family. Let’s dance.” That alone is pretty amazing. But the jersey itself had a special inscription from Brees, revealed by Pelicans beat writer Andrew Lopez.

When the 40-year-old quarterback who helped save football in New Orleans sends you a jersey with the inscription “passing the torch to you,” that’s a lot to take in. And near the end of the video the Pelicans tweeted, you can hear Williamson grappling with it. He asked himself if he’s ready to take it on.

He concluded that he is, in fact, ready for it. Besides, if Drew Brees thinks he’s ready, who is he to argue?
