DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — President Donald Trump took time out of his very busy day of tweeting his political grievances to tell people to enjoy the Daytona 500.
My great friends from NASCAR are having their big race today, The Daytona 500. Brian France and the France family are special people. Enjoy the race!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) February 18, 2018
Trump would likely have not made the tweet if NASCAR CEO Brian France hadn’t endorsed him at a rally in February 2016. France’s endorsement came at a public event and even led Trump to claim NASCAR as a whole had endorsed him. Spokespeople for the sanctioning body said France’s decision at the time was a personal and private one.
The president also touted NASCAR in the aftermath of comments made by two prominent team owners in the fall about the national anthem. Richard Petty and Richard Childress voiced their strong displeasure with the act of kneeling during the national anthem and Childress said he’d find a ticket on a Greyhound bus for any team employee of his who knelt during the anthem.
It’s been reported that Trump declined to go golfing over the weekend in honor of the 17 victims of Parkland, Florida, high school shooting, a possible explanation for why he’s been on Twitter so much.
