On a night in which the UFC celebrated its 25 years of history, Donald Cerrone ended up making some major history of his own.

In the final minute of the first round during Saturday’s UFC Fight Night, Cerrone forced a submission via arm bar from Mike Perry to capture the 21st UFC win of his career, a new UFC record.

Apparently, Perry should have tapped out a little earlier, judging from the injury report he provided after the match.

Cerrone’s win broke a three-way tie with Georges St-Pierre and Michael Bisping at 20 victories. He also set the record for most finishes in UFC history at 15, breaking a tie with Vitor Belfort and Anderson Silva.

The record has been more than seven years in the making for Cerrone, whose first UFC fight came in February 2011. Cerrone’s professional record now stands at 34-11 with 17 victories coming via submission.

Even sweeter for Cerrone, he did it all in his hometown of Denver, Colorado, with his family watching from the crowd. After the fight, Cerrone’s wife, son and grandmother all joined him in the ring.

“What a monumental way of doing it,” Cerrone said on the broadcast. “I love you Denver, I love you.”

Setting such a major milestone was only appropriate during an event in which the UFC went all out to mark its 25th anniversary, featuring a special retro Octagon and graphics.

Thanks to his quick first-round win, Cerrone shouldn’t have to wait long to receive his next opponent and an opportunity to put some space between him and the rest of the fighters in UFC history. He seemed pretty eager for that day to come.

“I don’t care who, I just want to know when,” Cerrone said.
