Shopping at dollar stores like Dollar Tree has gained popularity in recent years as the stores have become the fastest-growing food retailer from 2008 to 2020, according to a study by the American Public Health Association.

“Though dollar stores still represent a small share of national household food purchases (2.1% in 2020), they play an increasingly prominent role in food-at-home purchases for certain disadvantaged and rural communities,” the study states. The study also examined the quality and nutrients of foods sold at dollar stores.

Dollar stores have had a slight decrease in grocery-shopping customers from September 2022 to January 2023, a study by Civic Science, an opinion analytics platform found.

Civic Science also found a correlation between the recent price of eggs increasing, and Americans’ reliance on dollar stores for groceries. According to a poll, “more than two-thirds of adults who shop at dollar stores for groceries once a week or more are eating eggs less often or stopped eating them altogether.”

Bellingham alone has three Dollar Tree locations and Lynden, Blaine and Ferndale also all have their own.

The Bellingham Herald would like to know how popular local dollar stores are, and if you rely on them for affordable groceries. Please take our poll below to contribute:
