Sabby, a five-year-old female crossbreed, was found in Romania with a "horrific injury" after being attacked by a "psycho", according to witnesses.

Rescuers took the wounded animal to a see a vet, and after treatment she was brought to the UK to stay with the Norfolk charity Safe Rescue For Dogs.

Kelley Hare, founder of the charity, told Yahoo News that it regularly takes dogs from Romania and other countries after they’ve been abused.

She said: When Nicolae Ceaușescu [a Romanian communist leader] came into power, he built housing for people that wouldn’t allow them to have pets.”

This sparked a nationwide problem with stray dogs, she said.

“The country has particularly bad cases. There was another dog that was attacked with an axe who went to Germany.”

A post on the charity's Facebook page reads: “Sabby was found in a town in Romania that is renowned for the poor treatment of street animals.

“She had a horrific injury around her hips and back where some psycho had tried to slice her in half with a sword.

“The injury was open and down to the bone and her recovery took many months.

“The pain she must have endured prior to being rescued and given pain relief cannot even be imagined.

“The fact that she could emerge from this ordeal with any trust at all in humans is nothing short of miraculous.”

Kelley says Sabby has learned to become more trusting, and though at the start of her fostering men weren’t allowed to go near her because of her trauma, she has now been adopted by a couple who are “smitten” with her.

Sabby moves in with them next week.
