Yahoo Sports Dog of the Day: Tigers have favorable pitching matchup at home vs. scuffling Red Sox
After a horrendous start to the season, the Detroit Tigers are slowly creeping up toward the .500 mark.
Detroit lost 24 of its first 33 games this season, creating a hole that is far too big to dig out of from a postseason perspective. Still, to go from 9-24 on May 7 to 52-57 on Aug. 4 is an impressive turnaround. And it doesn’t look like that brand of baseball is going away any time soon.
The Tigers are 12-6 since the second half began and will play the second of a three-game set against the Boston Red Sox at home on Wednesday night. The Red Sox have lost six of their last seven and have fallen out of first place in the American League East. Despite the recent struggles, the Red Sox are still -150 favorites at BetMGM. The Tigers, on the other side, are +125 underdogs.
With Casey Mize on the mound, I’m rolling with the Tigers at +125.
Mize has allowed two earned runs or fewer in five of his last six starts and is coming off one of his better performances of the year in his last outing. The Red Sox will counter with lefty Eduardo Rodriguez, who boasts a 5.60 ERA and got shelled for six runs in just 3.1 innings pitched his last time out.
The Tigers have been really good at home this season, boasting a 34-21 overall record. On top of that, they are 26-14 as a home underdog. Boston, on the other hand, is 7-15 as a road favorite this season.
Those trends make me like the Tigers even more in this one.
