Doctor Who star Yasmin Finney has teased a "throwback" for the show's upcoming 60th anniversary specials.

The Heartstopper star is set to take on the role of Rose in the trio of episodes – due to air later this year – appearing alongside a returning David Tennant and Catherine Tate, who reprise their roles as the Doctor and Donna Noble.

While we know what the titles for the specials are, specifics about the episodes remain a mystery for now – though Finney did give one tease in a chat with GQ.

"Get ready, because it really is a throwback," she said.

The actress also shared her praise for returning showrunner Russell T Davies, calling him one of the "wisest men" she's met.

"You know what, he's always been ahead of his time. Always. And that's something that I see in myself, and I see reflected in his writing. I see the power he holds with every word," Finney added.

Last year, the actress spoke about the groundbreaking nature of her role as Rose, saying that a show as big as Doctor Who casting a trans star in a major part will "change the world".

"I'm happy to be the representation on a show that means a lot to so many," she told Vogue.

Alongside Finney, the 60th specials will also star franchise newcomers Neil Patrick Harris and Ruth Madeley, while Jacqueline King returns as Donna's mum Sylvia and Karl Collins is back as Donna's husband Shaun Temple.

Following on from the episodes, Tennant's Doctor will regenerate into Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor, who will be joined in the TARDIS by Millie Gibson's companion Ruby Sunday.

Doctor Who returns later in 2023 on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Meanwhile, in the US, the show airs on BBC America, with series 1-12 available on Max. Classic Doctor Who streams on Britbox in the UK.
