Is DIY ranch better than the real thing?

·2 min read

Ranch is one of the most popular salad dressings in the world, and honestly, I feel like most people don’t even put it on salads.

Decode and demystify Gen Z's latest online slang terms with In The Know's new glossary.

My go-to ranch pairings are chicken wings and pizza, and the list of what other ranch aficionados love to eat with the dressing goes on and on — and apparently even includes pasta.

A recent TikTok showed that you can actually make your own ranch — in a cute little mason jar, of course — pretty easily.

As a bad cook and an impatient person, I’m going to be putting that to the test. Is it actually better to make your own ranch versus just buying it at the grocery store?

How do you make your own ranch?

According to TikTok, this is what you need:

  • Chopped garlic

  • Olive oil

  • Garlic powder

  • Onion powder

  • Dried chives

  • Dill

  • Parsley

  • Any kind of seasoning you like

  • Greek yogurt

  • Mayo

  • Buttermilk

  • Salt

  • Pepper

I don’t know about you, but right off the bat, I hate this. This list is basically half of a grocery store, and what am I going to do with the leftover chives? That’s a problem for another time.

What pairs well with ranch?

Here’s what we’re going to be eating to see which ranch — DIY versus store-bought — is superior: chicken tenders, a dollar slice of pizza and macaroni.

How did it actually taste?

I found that this DIY ranch recipe was too sweet for me. Whether that was because of the Greek yogurt or the buttermilk or both, it was too overwhelming when I was eating my savory, greasy foods.

As for the pasta, I am alarmed by those who make macaroni salad with ranch. This was the first time I’ve filmed a Tried It episode where I actually had to spit out the food — off-camera, of course — and I even ate rattlesnake

Ultimately, store-bought continues to be the superior ranch. There’s no need to get all fancy with it, even though I do love a good mason jar.
