Diamondbacks to name Torey Lovullo as their new manager

According to Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro, and confirmed by John Heyman, the Arizona Diamondbacks have hired someone to occupy the managerial seat that Chip Hale recently vacated. That someone is Torey Lovullo, bench coach for the Boston Red Sox.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, it came down to Lovullo and the D-backs Triple-A manager Phil Nevin, and Lovullo was the winner.

Lovullo has put together a comprehensive baseball resume. He played eight seasons in the majors with seven teams (and one year with the Yakult Swallows in Japan) before moving on to managing. He managed four different minor league teams over ten years, and was then recruited by Toronto Blue Jays manager John Ferrell to be the club’s first base coach in 2010. He followed Farrell to the Boston Red Sox in 2013, and has been his bench coach ever since.

Lovullo has been considered for a number of major league managerial jobs over the years (including the Chicago Cubs at one point), but this is the first time he’s gotten the job. Well, officially. Lovullo served as interim manager of the Red Sox from mid-August 2015 to the end of the season when Farrell was being treated for lymphoma.
