Around the same time, in much less celebrated fashion, news broke of his presumed replacement.

Jarrod Dyson, 32, who played for the Seattle Mariners last season after seven years with the Kansas City Royals, stands in stark contrast with Martinez, whom Arizona traded for midseason to bolster its postseason run and turned out to be a half-season rental.

Whereas Martinez hit 45 home runs last season and has eclipsed 20 home runs in each of the last five seasons, Dyson has a grand total of 12 home runs in his eight-year career.

Dyson’s value comes on the bags and in the outfield, where he is one of the game’s top defenders. He has stolen at least 25 bases in each of the last six seasons, including going for better than 30 in four of those seasons.

Dyson won’t provide the pop or excitement at the plate that Martinez did, but he brings good value to the Diamondbacks at a significant discount.
