Collin McHugh is our new hero.

The Houston Astros relief pitcher endeared himself to baseball fans and earned a unique place in history Saturday night. All because he decided to put his pride aside and allowed himself to became the first player to be transported to the pitching mound on the Arizona Diamondbacks bullpen cart.

That’s right, the bullpen cart finally — and we mean FINALLY — got some use. It took 16 Diamondbacks homes game for it to happen, but it was definitely worth the wait.

Simply put, it was glorious.

The Diamondbacks brought back the bullpen cart for their 20th anniversary season this year. In doing so, they became the first MLB team to have a motorized vehicle for players since the 1990s. The Detroit Tigers have since added one at Comerica Park, but it’s really cool to see Arizona’s give the first official ride in over two decades.

As for McHugh’s performance. The former starter allowed a hit and two walks, but had enough left in his tank to record four outs without allowing a run to score. We’re definitely crediting the cart ride for giving him the energy to do that. Had Chris Devenski and Brad Peacock followed suit, perhaps they wouldn’t have combined to allow the winning run in Arizona’s 4-3 win.

We’ll focus on the positive here.

Here’s to you, Collin McHugh. And here’s to many more bullpen cart rides in the future.
