It’s official: Tom Herman must turn in his grill now that he is leaving Houston for Texas.

Do not worry, Herman’s Texas contract will allow him to buy as much ice as he wants. Tom Herman’s deal with the Longhorns will be five years in length with $25 million guaranteed.

Year 1 of the deal will be worth $5.25 million and his compensation is scheduled to increase by $250,000 every year of the contract.

Herman also will have an opportunity to make up to $725,000 a year in bonuses and could get a $1 million one-time payment if he is still with the Longhorns on Dec. 25, 2019.

As of right now, Herman’s salary would make him the sixth-highest paid public school football coach, behind Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh, Alabama’s Nick Saban, Ohio State’s Urban Meyer, Oklahoma’s Bob Stoops and Florida State’s Jimbo Fisher.

Herman’s predecessor, Charlie Strong, was scheduled to make $5.3 million next season.

Houston gave Herman a massive raise after last season which brought his yearly salary from $1.3 million to $3 million. That kind of raise is an astounding figure for a Group of Five program to pay a coach, but Houston wanted to keep Herman around Paul Wall’s city as long as possible.

Alas, Texas is the second-ranked revenue producer in college football. The resources and revenue Texas possesses won out for Herman, and he will look to put the Longhorn program back into national championship contention.
