Denis Shapovalov bounced from semis at Japan Open

Canada's Denis Shapovalov has been eliminated from the Japan Open.

The 19-year-old from Richmond Hill, Ont., was defeated 6-3, 6-3 on Saturday by Russia's Daniil Medvedev, who will face Kei Nishikori in Sunday's final.

Medvedev became the first qualifier to make the final in Tokyo in 16 years by beating Shapovalov.

Milos Raonic was also beaten by Medvedev, the Thornhill, Ont., veteran falling in the quarter-finals.

Shapovalov has reached three semifinals this season.

The Russian saved the only break point he faced, and has now held serve in 36 of 40 service games this week.

Nishikori, who has won this tournament twice, beat Medvedev in their only previous meeting in Monte Carlo earlier this year on his way to the final.
