Baylor coach Jim Grobe found himself backpedaling Monday afternoon after the Bears depth chart revealed wide receiver Ishmael Zamora was listed on the first team for Friday’s season opening game against Northwestern State.

Zamora was filmed earlier this summer kicking and hitting his dog with a belt. A fellow Baylor student reported Zamora to animal control and Grobe said Zamora, who was given a class C misdemeanor charge and issued a citation, would be disciplined.

“We’re not going to tolerate it,” Grobe said per the Waco Tribune. “He’s going to be disciplined by a bunch of people. The city is going to get a piece of him, and the university doesn’t take it lightly. There will be some sanctions from the university. From an athletic department standpoint we’ll do some things. Hopefully, it’s a teaching moment and a learning experience for him.”

According to Grobe, Zamora faces discipline from both the university and the athletic department. However, neither entity has taken any action on this matter. However, Grobe said Monday after receiving several questions about Zamora’s staus on the depth chart that he probably wouldn’t play Zamora unless he heard from the university on the impending discipline.

If Zamora does play for the Bears his reception will not be a warm one. More than 162,000 people have signed a petition requesting Zamora be removed from the program.

Additionally, starting safety Chance Waz won’t play the team’s first two games because of undisclosed disciplinary issues.
