DeAndre Hopkins says he wasn't throwing shade on Texans when he tweeted 'grateful' after team lost

Arizona Cardinals wideout DeAndre Hopkins said he didn’t throw shade on his former team with a poorly timed tweet. After the Houston Texans’ 34-20 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday, Hopkins tweeted the word “grateful,” prompting speculation he was glad he was traded from Houston.

That wasn’t his intention, though. Hopkins clarified his tweet was actually referencing his appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.”

Hopkins appeared on the program as part of a bit with The Roots.

Hopkins’ story checks out. Hopkins sent that tweet at 11:17 p.m. Central, less than an hour after the Texans’ loss. He could have been talking about the loss, but that’s enough distance from the end of the game to make Hopkins’ story believable.

On top of that, Hopkins tweeted out a clip of his interview with Fallon a few minutes later.

Because of that, we’re leaning toward believing Hopkins’ story.

DeAndre Hopkins can still prove Texans wrong

Sure, it’s fun to think Hopkins was trashing his old team, especially after many questioned why the Texans would deal Hopkins for David Johnson, who didn’t look like his usual self last season. That wasn’t the case Thursday, as Johnson looked explosive in his first game with the Texans.

Still, Hopkins has plenty of reasons to be upset with his former team. Following the deal, there were reports Hopkins feuded with Texans coach Bill O’Brien. Hopkins said he didn’t have a relationship with O’Brien at all.

If there is bad blood between Hopkins and his former team, he’s going to do the talking on the field. While the Texans won’t play the Cardinals in 2020, Hopkins can make the Texans look foolish if he goes out and posts another All-Pro season with the Cardinals.
