David Ortiz reenacts famous Boston movie scenes for charitable cause

And the Academy Award goes to…. David Ortiz?

That’s probably not a phrase we’ll ever hear uttered, but that didn’t stop the recently retired Red Sox star from trying his hand at acting for a promotional video for the charitable organization Omaze, which enlists stars to raise money for non-profit organizations.

Ortiz was tasked with reprising the roles of Matt Damon in “Good Will Hunting” and Jimmy Fallon in “Fever Pitch” as he single-handedly reenacted several notable scenes from Boston-themed films.

No, it’s not a serious audition or any sort of indication of Ortiz’s future plans, but rather a creatively crafted commercial designed to alert fans to an opportunity to win VIP tickets to Ortiz’s jersey retirement ceremony at Fenway Park on Friday, June 23, while in the process raising funds for the Red Sox Foundation and Ortiz’s Children’s Fund.

For every 10 cents fans donate, they’ll be given one chance to win. The baseline donation of $10 gives a fan 100 entries to win. A $50 donation gives fans gives 500 entries, and so on. The campaign runs until Thursday, June 15, and the best part is that eighty percent of donated funds will go to the noted charities.

It’s a really cool deal that highlights Ortiz’s charitable nature. Of course, everyone already knew about Ortiz’s infectious personality. But it’s cool seeing that personality come to life under a different spotlight.

Ortiz did make one previous appearance in the movie “Patriot Day,” where he reenacted his famous speech following the Boston Marathon bombing.

It was that emotional moment that cemented Boston as Ortiz’s second home. And knowing now that no other Red Sox player will wear his No. 34, it’s only fitting that this promotional video will not only serve to raise awareness for two great causes, but will also serve as a tribute to the city that embraced him.
