David Maas, part of iconic 'Quick Change' NBA halftime show, dies of COVID-19

David Maas, half of the husband and wife “Quick Change” magic act that wowed NBA and college hoops audiences around the country, has died of COVID-19. He was 57.

Maas and his wife Dania Kaseeva were illusionists who specialized in lighting-fast costume changes. They changed costumes numerous times over the course of a short routine, stepping into fabric tubes wearing one thing and emerging just seconds later wearing something completely different. They could even change costumes in the middle of a confetti shower.

David & Dania, as the act was known, were the official halftime entertainment for the NBA. They performed in every NBA arena, 15 WNBA arenas, and at the All-Star Game. They were also incredibly popular at colleges and universities. According to the New York Times, at least 76 universities brought them to their campuses to perform during halftime, and they also did their act at the NCAA Final Four.

The couple had been doing their act together since they married in 1996. Both were circus performers when they met — Maas was a ringmaster and Kaseeva did a hula-hoop routine — and they devised the act so they could travel together and keep their romance alive. They first performed the act on national TV in 2001, and achieved viral internet fame in 2006 after they appeared on “America’s Got Talent.”

Teams pay tribute to Maas

ESPN named David & Dania “the most successful halftime act in sports” in 2011, and are well-known among hoops fans. When news of Mass’ death began circulating, a number of teams paid tribute to him on social media.
