David Backes scores historic goal against old team (Video)

David Backes was the story going in to the game between the Boston Bruins and the St. Louis Blues.

The game marks the first time Backes has faced his former since leaving for Boston in the offseason as a free agent.

On the power play, Backes is perched in front of his former teammate Jake Allen. Torey Krug sends in a shot on net and the former Blues captain cleans up the garbage. As he bats the puck into the net his stick breaks.

The goal itself is memorable for two reasons beyond Backes scoring on his former team.

First, it’s the 20,000th goal scored in Boston Bruins history. They are the second team in NHL to reach that mark. Second, by scoring on the Blues Backes has now completed the cycle where he’s scored on every team in the league.

This game is emotional for Backes after spending his career to this point with the Blues; however, it was played in Boston. When they get to St. Louis, the environment will be even more charged by the fans thanking their captain for all that he did.
