Dave Stewart remembers the '89 earthquake and calls out a Hall of Famer on 'Old Baseball Cards'

Thirty years ago on Thursday, Mother Nature threw Major League Baseball a curveball. The World Series between the Oakland Athletics and San Francisco Giants was postponed when a 6.9 magnitude earthquake made the Bay Area shake.

For the anniversary of one of the most memorable World Series, we’ve lined up three special episodes of “Old Baseball Cards” featuring stars of that 1989 Oakland A’s championship team. To start, we’re opening packs of 1989 Topps and Fleer with A’s ace Dave Stewart, who was the World Series MVP that year and who threw a shutout in Game 1 of the series.

Stewart leads off by finding a Giants player and shares lots of memories from there. He calls out a Hall of Fame hitter, sees a number of friends (our episode even gets interrupted by one of his buddies) and finds one ex-teammate he’s willing to trade his whole pack for. Of course, we have to talk about the famous Dave Stewart Death Stare, too.

Stewart went on to work in a few different MLB front offices — including working as the GM of the Arizona Diamondbacks. He’s also been an MLB agent. So he knows plenty of people around the game and that comes through in his stories.

If you’re new to our show, we open packs of old cards with baseball players, coaches and famous fans. The cards themselves might not be worth much, but the stories and memories they produce are priceless. There are plenty of great ones below you should also check out. A few that might be timely right about now: Nationals GM Mike Rizzo, Astros star Alex Bregman, Hall of Famer and Fox Sports analyst John Smoltz and Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia.

Next up, we have World Series throwback episodes with Rickey Henderson (Oct. 21) and Dennis Eckersley (Oct. 24).
