Dana White: Khabib Nurmagomedov's UFC 229 check being withheld, suspension and fines could follow

Khabib Nurmagomedov is likely facing some stiff penalties after sparking what could go down as one of the most infamous moments in MMA history.

The UFC lightweight champion successfully defended his belt against Conor McGregor by submitting the Irishman with a rear naked choke at UFC 229, but the fighting didn’t stop there. Nurmagomedov soon climbed out of the Octagon to attack what appeared to be members of McGregor’s entourage, members of his own entourage attacked McGregor and both fighters had to be escorted out under heavy security.

The immediate aftermath is Nurmagomedov did not receive his belt after the fight, three members of his team were arrested and, now, the financial repercussions could be significant.

UFC president Dana White told reporters after the brawl that the Nevada State Athletic Commission was withholding both fighters’ checks, but later clarified that McGregor received his purse. Nurmagomedov might have some waiting to do.

Per MMA Fighting, Nurmagomedov’s fight check came in at a hefty $2 million and will be held pending an investigation. But that likely won’t be the extent of the punishment for Nurmagomedov, as White didn’t rule out a suspension and fines for the Russian. He also speculated there could be visa issues in the future for the fighter.

All in all, a rough night for McGregor, UFC and, possibly most of all, Nurmagomedov.
