Yahoo Sports Dana White: If Conor McGregor Wins Second Belt, It Will Be a Short Reign
If Conor McGregor wins the lightweight championship at UFC 205 on Nov. 12 in New York, he will become the first fighter in UFC history to hold titles in two different weight classes simultaneously.
It was announced late Monday that McGregor would retain his featherweight title while challenging Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight championship at UFC New York. Randy Couture and BJ Penn both held belts in different UFC divisions, but neither held them simultaneously. McGregor would be the first.
If he accomplishes that feat, it will be short lived, according to UFC president Dana White.
“So this fight's coming up. He wants to try to gain both belts,” White said Tuesday on ESPN's SportsCenter. He immediately followed that with, “He will give up one of the titles after that fight in New York.”

So, while McGregor might accomplish something no other UFC fighter ever has, it appears that it would be a short-lived reign over dual divisions.
Fighters and fans alike have been clamoring for the UFC to strip McGregor of the featherweight championship. This will be his third consecutive bout in a different weight class since he defeated Jose Aldo for the 145-pound title in December.
Despite the featherweight belt being the one locked away in the closet, White wasn't sure, if McGregor is successful on Nov. 12, which title he would relinquish.
“That's a good question. That's what we'll figure out,” White said. “He's got some stuff going on right now, some personal stuff that I'm sure he'll announce when he's ready, but this fight made sense.”
