Dan Wetzel's College Football Podcast: How Charlie Weis made out like a bandit

Steven Godfrey is a senior writer at SBNation. He is not just one of the best long-form writers covering college football but one of its smartest thinkers. He dives deep on subjects and analyzes a bit of everything. His perspective is always spot on.

So it’s a good thing we got a new microphone to replace the broken one and got this week’s podcast taped (at last). This here is a good conversation.

Topics include:

• The firing, and big payout, of Charlie Weis and how different coaching personalities can be sold to ADs, but perhaps not work when it comes to coaching players. This includes his tenures at Notre Dame, as an assistant at Florida and in New England – it was far more Charlie Weis talk then we expected, but it turned out pretty well.

• Michigan and whether Brady Hoke should be replaced for not getting Shane Morris out of the game or just because the team stinks.

It goes on to discuss AD Dave Brandon, the culture at Michigan, how it possibly compares to the open Florida job, why these power programs tend to lose their way, what chance is there that a Harbaugh actually comes back, should Michigan focus on Mississippi State’s Dan Mullen (can it beat out the Gators?) and what is it about Ohio State that it has done a better job weathering tough times?

• Godfrey is an Ole Miss alum so there is a fairly in-depth conversation on the history of the program (and of the state of Mississippi) and why college football has been so slow to take power there. Plus plenty about the excitement there this weekend as both the Rebels and Bulldogs host big games.

• Games picked include:

Arizona (-23) at Oregon
Ohio State (-7.5) at Maryland
Stanford (-2.5) at Notre Dame
Nebraska at Michigan State (-7.5)
Oklahoma (-5) at TCU
Texas A&M (-1.5) at Miss State
Alabama (-6) at Ole Miss

This is a really good hour of podcast. It goes on all sorts of tangents that can’t properly be recapped here. Plus the new microphone sounds great. So check it out here or on iTunes. It’s free.
