Dan Hardy Looking to Return to the UFC at Lightweight

Dan Hardy Looking to Return to the UFC at Lightweight

Former UFC welterweight title contender Dan Hardy was forced to step away from fighting in early 2013 after being diagnosed with a rare heart condition. While preparing to face Matt Brown, Hardy discovered that he suffered from Wolff–Parkinson–White syndrome, a disorder of the electrical system of the heart. His fighting career abruptly came to a halt.

“The Outlaw” is currently seeking medical clearance to compete again.

“I would very much like to (fight again). I’ve got a few fights left on my contract. I need to get cleared by a doctor. I’m in the process of doing that,” Hardy said Wednesday on UFC Tonight.

The 34-year-old isn't looking to be placed on an upcoming fight card. He plans to sit back and wait for the right opportunity to arise.

“If I make a comeback, it’s not going to be Dan Hardy’s on this card. It’s going to be someone is going to pull out and I’m going to throw my name in the hat and I’m going to take an opportunity,” he said.

If the once 170-pound title contender returns, it will likely be as a lightweight.

“I don’t know what weight class. I’m a lot lighter than I used to be. My training has changed. My diet has changed. I feel so much quicker than I used to be. I’m a lot closer to the condition and the weight that I was when I first started my career,” said Hardy.

“I’ve never done a test cut, but I’m fought twice at 160, and I felt very comfortable at that weight. I certainly feel like it’s a better weight class for me especially given some of the monsters at welterweight right now,” he added. “If I were to come back, 155 I feel like would not only be a better weight for my size, but it would be better for my performance as well.”
