Dallas Cowboys assistant Joe Whitt out of first two preseason games with health issue

Dallas Cowboys secondary coach/defensive pass game coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. has missed the last couple of days of practice addressing a private health matter, the team announced on Tuesday.

Whitt will not be traveling with the team to Denver for Saturday’s preseason opener against the Broncos.

He won’t return to the team for practice until the Cowboys return to Dallas after the second preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Aug. 20.

Whitt will miss the two practices against the Chargers as well.

He said he should be ready for the last preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Witt has been absent from practice but he has been participating in meetings.

Witt declined to disclose what the medical issue is but termed it a freak accident that happened once he got out training camp with the Cowboys.

“I have had a little health issue. I can;t be on the field,” Whitt said. “I’m good. I just can’t be on the field. If I get hit, it’s not the best thing for me. I am very active on the field. “

Whitt said it’s more about treatment and recovery and not getting hit.

Defensive quality control assistant Canon Matthews and secondary coach Al Harris have filled in for Whitt on the practice field.
