Yahoo Sports Dabo Swinney continues FSU criticism, says he's 'not going to worry about advice from Tallahassee'
It’s been three days since Clemson’s game against Florida State was postponed and Dabo Swinney is still unhappy about the postponement.
Saturday’s game was postponed hours before kickoff because of Florida State’s trepidation to play after a Clemson backup offensive lineman who traveled with the team learned he had tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday. Swinney has been extremely outspoken about the decision to postpone the game, and that continued on Tuesday during his midweek news conference.
“We’re not doctors. I’m not trying to be a doctor, I just listen to the doctors,” Swinney said. “Listen, I’m not really worried much about what they say down there in Tallahassee. I’ve been in this league 18 years, been the head coach for 12, they’ve had three head coaches in in four years. So decisions they make, I’m not going to worry about advice from Tallahassee. I trust the people here and I trust our doctors 100 percent.”
Mike Norvell: football coaches aren’t doctors
Swinney’s comments came when he was asked about what FSU coach Mike Norvell said on Tuesday. Norvell, who missed a game earlier this year after he was diagnosed with COVID-19, made what was easily interpreted as a dig at Swinney when he said that football coaches weren’t doctors.
Norvell’s comments came after Swinney said Sunday night that FSU was simply using the coronavirus as an excuse to not play the game. Clemson was willing to play the game on Saturday, but Florida State wanted to postpone because of concerns about the potential spread of the virus among players that spend a lot of time on the field in close proximity to one another.
“They said what they said and we said what we said,” Swinney said Wednesday. “We obviously don’t agree. That’s why it was very clearly stated that the medical groups did not agree. I trust our medical people here.”
No immediate makeup game plans have been announced. The game could be played on Dec. 12, but Clemson has so far publicly balked at traveling back to Tallahassee. Norvell even said Tuesday that he would be willing to help pay for the Tigers’ travel back to the state so that the game could be played.
