Cutting class for the World Series is a valid excuse in Ohio

An education is a valuable thing. We here at The Stew subscribe the the belief that knowledge is power. Stay in school, go to class and get good grades and you’ll be all right!

With that said, if our dad bought us tickets to a World Series game that featured our favorite team — at team that hasn’t brought home a title in 68 years — we might be willing to temporarily abandon our morals.

That was the exact scenario one student at Ohio University found himself in recently. Charlie Winovich received tickets to see the Cleveland Indians play in Game 1 of the World Series. In order to attend the event, he would have to skip his Geological Sciences class.

That was a risk Charlie was willing to take, he gave his homework to another student and left for the game. It looked as though everything was fine initially, but then Charlie received an email from his teacher after the professor noticed he was not actually in class.

That led to the following exchange:

Charlie’s professor took attendance near the end of class, and realized he wasn’t there. He confronted Charlie about the issue, forcing Charlie to admit he cut class in order to attend Game 1. Charlie even attached a picture of himself in the email to prove he was there.

Amazingly (or perhaps not surprisingly considering this happened in Ohio), Charlie’s teacher was totally fine with it. His response to his student read, “that looks like an impeccable excuse. No repercussions. Go Tribe!”

Now, you might be inclined to think the whole thing is made up, but it doesn’t look like that’s the case. R. Damian Nance is an actual professor of Geological Sciences at Ohio University. The email listed in Charlie’s screenshot is Nance’s actual email listed on the Ohio University website. The whole thing could be some elaborate Photoshop hoax, but it looks pretty dang real.

OK, that’s pretty awesome. It even has us here at The Stew reconsidering our never cut class policy. Here’s our new rule: Cutting class is only acceptable if the Indians or the Chicago Cubs are in the World Series. Given the history of both franchises, we’re happy to make one exception every 60+ years or so.
