Ooo lala! Roland garros on tsn and tsn+ [ ] >>> Thomas wants to demonstrate they have not been crippled and that they still have both weapons and the ability to use them. >> Marcia: sirens the sound in tel aviv as hamas fires rockets from gaza for the first time in months. >> We, the students are steadfast in our demands for divestment, disclosure and for cutting ties with israeli academic institutions participating in the israeli apartheid. >> Reporter: pro- palestinian protesters meet with university officials as the deadline to clear the encampment approaches you might want to see my family. Of the tickets want that bad for me. >> Plus economic times are not stopping canadians from taking off on a vacation. But their destinations may surprise you. >> Marcia: hello and marsh mcmillan. Thank you for being with us, new concerns about an escalation in the war between israel and hamas today after rockets were fired in tel aviv the château ocean tel aviv for the first time in months picks these reporter has more. >>> A barrage of hamas rockets fired at tel aviv, many intercepted. But not before scion dan sirens and the israeli city, sending many went running for cover. Israel's military says eight rockets were fired and there have been no reports of casualties. This 84-year-old woman said shrapnel came crashing to the roof of her home north of tel aviv. [ Speaking Alternate Language ] >> (Voice of Interpreter): suddenly there was a huge boom smoke firing dust all over the room. [ End of Interpretation ] >> Reporter: hamas has claimed responsibility for what appears to be the first long-range rocket attacks from gaza since january. >> I think moss wants to demonstrate that they have not been crippled and that they still have both weapons and the ability to use them. >> This comes as israeli forces fight off a hamas resurgence in northern parts of the enclave and continue their operation and raw for against court orders and mounting political pressure. Our goal in gaza is especially emphasized hearing rocco destroy him off, return hostages and maintain freedom of operations. >> Meanwhile, aid trucks started crossing into gaza today so than israel, thanks to a new agreement that bypassed the raw for crossing that closed earlier this month when israeli forces took control of the palestinian side. Still, humanitarian organization say they are not nearly enough access points. >> We solve a problem with the amount of aid coming in. >> Today some attack of a mosque by hamas nash show resilient seven months into the war have some questioning weather israel's goal of fully eliminating mosque can be achieved. Jeremy sharon, ctv news, ottawa. >> With me now is aaron david miller, the former state department middle east advisor and senior fellow the carnegie endowment for international peace. Thank you so much, or being with us. By now? What is the significance of the timing, given that it's been four months since hamas launched in the sultan to israel. >> The israelis are operating and raw for,'s #1. And they want to demonstrate fact that they have the capacity to launch high trajectory weapons. And how successful the israelis are in stopping them. And second course is negotiations resume this week mediated by the egyptians, atari's americans and israelis. I'm sure the key palestinian decision maker wanted to send an unmistakable signal that hamas' objectives remain high and have not yet changed. >> Renée: >> Marcia: from wearing gaza gaza with the striker originate. And from your point of hamas still wanting to make the point clear that there capable of doing this. What does this mean for israel's capability of trying to root out hamas from every corner of gaza. >> I think israelis understand

that it's probably not going to be possible to drain destroy hamas is an organized military force which would mean hitting the rocket production facilities and launchers. Remember we do live in a densely populated area. And those rockets could have come from anywhere inside areas where the israelis have so far not wanted to go or are reluctant to go, given the risks of additional palestinian deaths and alienating their key ally. Seats unmistakably clear what the do's and don'ts are with respect to operating and raw file. Today there were airstrikes in the northwest of raw cackling multiple palestinians. I'm afraid we're really on the road to nowhere. There is no process underway that will provide a quick or easy way to and this. >> Marcia: to do you think the israeli attack and ruffle was retaliation and do you expect more from israel in the coming hours and days? Is really to probably operating offer for weeks to come. I would say for another several weeks at least. Unless, unless the negotiations are supposed to take place this week end up reducing the cease-fire and releasing additional hostages. In part pardoning that, negotiations are usually two speeds, slower slower. I'm at indirect, and there's no trust to say the least. And the key palestinian decision-maker is absconded joe's has absconded 20 metres below ground so mark somewhere in a tunnel be at those below khan younis making these decisions. So it's a very onerous, and dysfunctional sort of situation. >> Marcia: how much faith do you have in those option of the cease-fire talks? >> They will resume, I think there is a reasonable chance. But again it really blew depends on what hamas' calculations are. And again, wants to trade hostages tunnels in time for what he really wants. And that is an end to the war, survival of the leadership and hamas to survival as an organization and obviously the israelis are heavenly opposed to all of the above. >> Reporter: aaron david miller is a formal state department middle east advisor. Thank you so much for your time and analysis. You are welcome.

>>> Here at home the pro- palestinian protesters are meeting with university of toronto officials as the deadline to clear an account encampment on university purchase. And they have issued a trespass notice saying that they plan to take legal steps if they encampment is not cleared out by monday at 8:00 am. Protesters are calling on the schools to cut ties with israel and divest companies -- from companies profiting up the war in gaza. All made an offer to protesters on thursday which was rejected. Organizers say they plan to hold a rally tomorrow morning. These reporter has more from the encampment. And trying, what are you hearing from students were taking part in the encampment as the deadline approaches? >> Or marcia, we're hearing that they plan to stay. And as it was going before they went in to the meeting, the two sides were very far apart. And conceal for my right shoulder that is actually the entrance to the encampment that is pretty well controlled by the people inside. We try to get inside, there was a couple standoffs picking things can get tense very quickly around here. But focusing on what's going on inside, the meeting started but a half an hour ago pictures 530 local time. In the meeting started between university administration and the encampment negotiating team. And so I mentioned the two sides were far apart. And you talked about exactly what the demands had been picking there was they vestment. There had been the university there still are the university to divest from any sort of companies that could be funding the israeli military and weapons making. I was also disclosure of any investments they may have. And then there was cutting times -- ties particularly to the university in israel. The original offer from the university had a framework where they could talk about they vestment and disclosure but no actual commitment and they said it was a heart no on cutting any ties with academic institutions. So that's where they were as the meeting begins. And you mentioned the deadline at 8:00 am tomorrow. And we're not exactly sure how the university will react. But they are seeking an injunction. Team from here were actually planning or the team we spoke within the the encampment say that they believe they are on the right side there we'll not be any sort of legal framework to move in with the police but they say they acknowledge it's a risk. If you take a look shoulder you'll see in encampment it's pretty peaceful, you will see it pretty will long go in there just waiting to find out just what happens. But let's imagine they were so far apart one these negotiations began. But like I said, as long as the encampment spokesperson told me today that they are willing to this but they are aware of other situations, those being edmonton, alberta calgary where the university has said that that something that they don't want. And people arguing that that's what may happen, is this of course we do have that deadline coming tomorrow. We know the encampment will be holding a rally tomorrow. They are expected to be having the ontario federation of on labour here. We'll be don't know yet is whether the police will be joining them as well. Thank you for the reporting. We appreciate it. And with now more on the meeting between the officials and students, I am joined by sarah rask, graduate student at the university of toronto. And she is the official spokesperson of the encampment on campus. And hello to you, can you give us a sense of what is happening right now with the negotiations and how far apart are the sides make us, so I'm a representative meeting with the ut admin. And they are looking over our counter offers close I don't know how the conversation is going. But the initial offer that they did give off was more for statement for the university policy than offer. And so our counter offer is actionable, and it tells university exactly what they can do to help us meet our demands. >> Reporter: 's you rejected with the university put forward to you. >> We rejected the first offer they put out, and it cannot be the final offer. As ut they do bargaining with unions on campus all the time. In the first offer cannot be the final. And so we reject the final offer but we are proceeding with the negotiation, and we will continue countering their offer as it is specific to a meeting our demand. >> The deadline is 8:00 am tomorrow. What do you happening the hours between now and then as.

>> So ut is filing an injunction, and it amassed to a court order, specifically calling the police and we will continue to include that in our demand. And had 40,000 people murdered, in we are wanting to approach the negotiating table in good faith. And so we ask this is my final question for you, do you think, saw these university students are prepared to be arrested and taken away buy police. >> We are hoping that this doesn't end in police brutality or come to the faculty having their jobs taken away for them or the students fiche facing sanctions. We're hoping this university of toronto does the rate think just negotiates instead of calling the police on that bus. That being said, given the gravity of the situation, we know there are consequences, we are hoping that although things don't escalate, we are willing to take the risks that they may or may not. >> Thank you so much for that, we appreciate that update. >> Members of toronto's jewish community gathered along the waterfront for a solidarity rally this afternoon. >> Marcia: members of the group jewish east toronto organized a shoulder to shoulder solidarity event in support of remaining hostages being held by hamas in gaza. Demonstrators called for their safe return. >> We are demanding they are released. Now. >> Reporter: israel says around 100 hostages are still being held in gaza along with the bodies of 30 others. >>> Coming up, we have more news.
