It’s been over four months since Craig Cunningham suffered cardiac arrest and collapsed before an AHL game. The 26-year-old survived and later needed to have part of his left leg amputated to prevent an infection from spreading.

On Friday, the Tucson Roadrunners captain was back in a familiar place taking the first strides of a long journey. Joined by his physical therapists and teammate Conor Garland, Cunningham laced up his skates, prosthetic foot and all, for the first time since Nov. 19.

Hockey fans have continued to root for Cunningham in his recovery.

The Roadrunners have kept Cunningham as part of the family since that night in November. He’s attended games, done the ceremonial face-off honors and will be at next Saturday’s Arizona Coyotes game for similar duties during the NHL side’s final home game of the season.

Cunningham has said he’d like to stay in hockey and work as a scout or in management. He might get that chance as the Arizona Daily Star reported that the Coyotes have offered Cunningham a job within the organization.

“Obviously I miss playing every single day, and I miss the atmosphere around the locker room,” he said. “The guys have been great. From Day 1, they’ve been to see me every day. It’s been pretty incredible.”
