Coyotes' Shane Doan would need 'perfect' situation to consider trade
If there was a time for Arizona Coyotes captain Shane Doan to agree to waive his no-movement clause in search of a Stanley Cup, it would have been last season when he was in the middle of a 28-goal, 47-point campaign.
Now? Well, the number of suitors may not be as large and, as Doan put it on Monday to reporters in Edmonton, it would have to be a “perfect” situation.
“I never said that I wouldn’t go anywhere,” he said. “(But) that’s never been the plan. I’ve always kind of wanted to stay here. If there was ever an opportunity or whatever, the Coyotes have always been incredible to me and respectful to me in every way to be honest with me. I’ve talked about it with my family to make a decision on it if it was going to come up, but it’d have to be so perfect and so right. That’s pretty hard for it all to line up perfectly. It’d have to be exactly perfect, and that just doesn’t happen in our sport too often.”
Doan is on a unique one-year deal signed last July and he hasn’t said what his future plans are after this season, so it’s unknown if a trade deadline rental would be his last kick at the can in the NHL.

But like another potential rental, Jarome Iginla, Doan isn’t having the best offensive season, but there could be a bottom line spot open for him on a potential contender. This isn’t the first time this possibility has been there for Doan. He said he’s had similar discussions in the past with ex-Coyotes GM Don Maloney, but there are a some things that could affect such a decision, like accepting the fact that he’d be away from his family for a few months and, like he said, the stars aligning to match up with his ideal situation.
A first-round pick of the Winnipeg Jets in 1995, Doan has played all of his 1,509 games with the Jets/Coyotes organization. His rookie season in the NHL was the Jets’ last in Winnipeg, and the 39-year-old has been through the ups and downs of the franchise’s time in Arizona. But the closest Doan and the Coyotes have come to a Cup was reaching the Western Conference Final in 2012 where they fell to the eventual champion Los Angeles Kings. Other than that, it’s been eight first-round exits and 11 playoff-less seasons.
The Coyotes will be in the lottery this spring, not chasing a Cup, and who knows how the off-season will play out in regards to the future of Doan with the organization. The 2017 NHL trade deadline in Feb. 28, so there’s a little over a month left for him to decide.
