A day after he left a game on a stretcher, Arizona Coyotes forward Brad Richardson underwent surgery to fix fractured tibia and fibula bones in his right leg.

Richardson left Thursday’s game against the Vancouver Canucks after he was on the receiving end of an awkward hit from defenseman Nikita Tryamkin.

Here’s the update from the Coyotes:

“After consultation with our athletic trainers, medical staff and doctors in Vancouver, it was determined that Brad would require surgery to repair his fractured tibia and fibula bones in his leg,” said Coyotes General Manager John Chayka. “Brad’s surgery went very well today and we are confident that he will make a full recovery. He will be out of the lineup indefinitely.”

In the second year of a three-year deal, Richardson got off to a solid start with nine points in 16 games and is tied for second of the Coyotes with five goals. His absence could now mean the end of those Martin Hanzal trade rumors with the team thin in the experience department now down the middle.

The Coyotes are last in the NHL with 12 points and have struggled staying healthy, with the likes of Hanzal, Mike Smith, Jamie McGinn and Michael Stone among those missing time in the first month of the season. Not having one of their key offensive leaders early on for likely the rest of the season won’t help them in their attempt to climb out of the league’s basement.
