COVID-19: Singapore confirms 8 new cases, 30th death

SINGAPORE — The Ministry of Health (MOH) confirmed eight new COVID-19 cases in Singapore on Saturday (13 March), taking the country's total case count to 60,088.

The new cases are all imported and there ere are no new cases of locally-transmitted infection.

There is one new COVID-19-related death, the MOH said in a news release on Saturday.

The 61-year-old male Singaporean died on 12 March 2021. According to the ministry, he had been in the UAE for work, and returned to Singapore on 30 January. He developed a cough just before departing the UAE and shortness of breath on the same day, and tested positive for COVID-19 infection upon arrival in Singapore. He had a past history of hypertension, hyperlipidaemia and gout.

Details of the imported cases

Among the eight imported cases:

  • One is a Singaporean and another is a Singapore permanent resident who returned from India and Papua New Guinea.

  • One student’s pass holder who arrived from India.

  • One is a work pass holder who arrived from Bangladesh.

  • One work permit holder who arrived from Bangladesh.

  • Two are short-term visit pass holders. Among them, one arrived from the US to work in Singapore. The other is a sea crew who arrived from Indonesia on a vessel, and had remained isolated until his COVID-19 test result came back positive and he was conveyed to the hospital.

  • One special pass holder, who is a sea crew. He arrived from Indonesia on a vessel, and was tested onboard without disembarking.

These cases had all already been placed on Stay-Home Notice (SHN) or isolated upon arrival in Singapore and were tested while serving SHN or during isolation.

Overall, the number of new cases in the community has decreased from four cases in the week before to two cases in the past week. The number of unlinked cases in the community has also decreased from three cases in the week before to two cases in the past week.

99% of total cases have recovered, none in ICU


With 11 more patients discharged from hospitals or community isolation facilities on Saturday, 59,961 cases – or 99.8 per cent of the total – have fully recovered from the infection.

Most of the 17 hospitalised cases are stable or improving. None of them are in the intensive care unit.

A total of 80 patients – with mild symptoms or are clinically well but still test positive – are isolated and cared for at community facilities.

Apart from the 30 patients who have died from COVID-19 complications, 15 others who tested positive for the virus were determined to have died from unrelated causes, including three whose deaths were attributed to a heart attack and another four, whose deaths were attributed to coronary heart disease.

Among the 68 confirmed cases reported from 7 to 13 March, 33 cases have tested positive for their serology tests, 27 have tested negative, and eight serology test results are pending.
