ESPN releases heartwarming 'we miss sports' spot

We all feel it.

It’s been 19 long days since the NBA suspended its season, the first domino in a long list of sporting events and leagues to go on pause during the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.

Life is different around the globe right now and there are larger questions to answer than “when will sports come back?”

Still. We miss it. We want it. And ESPN reminded viewers Monday why that is with a heartwarming spot on the emotional power of sports.

It’s part of the “There’s No Place Like Sports” series ESPN launched in September. The second spot was released in January and a third was scheduled for late March around the theme “hope springs eternal,” ESPN’s senior vice president of marketing Laura Gentile said in an ESPN Front Row interview.

“When live sports came to an abrupt halt, that theme of hope and optimism took on a completely new — and much larger — meaning,” Gentile said.

“From the very beginning, ‘There’s No Place Like Sports’ was purposely designed to be an ever-evolving stage for sports to showcase the timeless themes of human potential and connection. Now more than ever, we want to reminisce about those moments with all fans — and in acknowledging the current times, let them know that we miss it, too.”

Athletes may not be on the court making magical moments, but many are giving people hope and something to believe in off of it with donations to emergency funds and plans to help those impacted financially by the pandemic.
