Coronation Street star Dame Maureen Lipman hints at future on show

Maureen Lipman has hinted at her future on Coronation Street as Evelyn Plummer.

The actress has played the role for the past five years, with her contract currently running until September. However, she has suggested she may sign up for another year.

"I like being part of a company," she told The Mirror. "I call Corrie the National Theatre of Television."

Maureen signed her last year-long contract in July 2022, revealing to Reader's Digest at the time: "I won't hear a word against it. It's full of quite exceptional actors working with very little rehearsal, very little direction.

"Am I envious of some of my peers? Sometimes, yes. Do I have the right to be? Of course not. Would I like to be in Sex Education? Yes, of course. Am I sorry I've signed up with Corrie for another year? No, I'm not."

In her latest interview, the actress also spoke about playing Evelyn, explaining: "We're very alike. Like her, I am assertive, I do stand my ground but, unlike her, I don't steal bottles of brandy from convenience stores.

"But I know that woman inside out. I know where she shops, I know why she's tight. I know why she wouldn't get her vest off when she had a lover."

Back in January, it was confirmed that Maureen will be taking a brief four-week break from the soap this year as she brings her one-woman play Rose to the West End.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
