Conor McGregor takes aim at WWE again; CM Punk responds

The Conor McGregor vs. WWE feud is showing no signs of letting up after McGregor fired more verbal shots at the sports entertainment promotion during a recent media day in Las Vegas in promotion of his upcoming UFC 202 fight versus Nate Diaz on Saturday.

While the conversation started with his rematch, things quickly progressed to other subjects and when the topic of the WWE was brought up again, McGregor certainly didn’t shy away. The UFC featherweight champion had stated on Twitter that he’d smack the entire WWE roster, which drew the ire of many professional wrestlers. But McGregor wasn’t about to back down.

“I’m just speaking the truth,” McGregor said. “These new age of those guys are absolute dweebs. They just seem messed up in the head. I don’t know what it is. When I listen to them talk, when I listen to them carry themselves, they just don’t seem right in the head. That might have been a bit rudeness for me to say, but again: It ain’t trash talk, it’s truth talk.”

When asked about Ric Flair’s comments about the Irishman hijacking the retired wrestler’s gimmick, McGregor eased off his stance on the older regime of wrestlers but maintained that it’s the current crop that he’s taken issue with.

“I don’t know what to say to Ric Flair,” McGregor said. “This ain’t no gimmick. This is the real [expletive]. I’ve gotta get in and fight a man for real. With no script, with no nothing. He was talking about bringing some other wrestler guys out to challenge me. Come bring it, then. This is the real [expletive] over here. You want to come over, we can fight, no problem. A few of them are talking about the street and all. If they want to do that, come at me and see what happens.”

McGregor also took aim at the WWE’s biggest star, John Cena.

“He’s 40 years of age [and] he’s walking around in a luminous orange T-shirt and a headband talking about nobody can see him,” McGregor said. “We can see him right there. He’s a big fat, 40-year-old failed Mr. Olympia [expletive].”

One former WWE star gave his take on the McGregor/WWE situation: CM Punk.

Punk, who will make his UFC debut next month, addressed the situation in an interview with Hot 97’s Peter Rosenberg.

The former WWE superstar said that he’s “not surprised” with McGregor’s comments but was “shocked” at the number of wrestlers who responded via Twitter.

“They got worked,” Punk said. “They should have known better.”

Punk felt that Flair volunteering wrestlers to fight McGregor was unnecessary and made them look bad while McGregor accomplished his goal of getting their attention.

“It’s embarrassing fighting with anyone on Twitter,” Punk said. “You can fight with the idiots on Twitter but from the outsiders perspective somebody looking at that can’t tell the different between who the idiot is so don’t respond.”

Where Punk did agree with McGregor was that the talent in the WWE isn’t what it used to be.

“You have to be tough to be in wrestling but do you have to be tough to be in that locker room? Not anymore,” Punk said. “It’s a different world and a different business not only from when I started but from when I was there.”

Punk will indirectly get an opportunity to prove McGregor’s theory when he makes the jump from pro wrestling to the UFC against Mickey Gall at UFC 203 on Sept. 10. Oddsmakers aren’t so sure that Punk will prove himself to be tough enough as Sportsbook Review has him as a +265 underdog.
