Report: Conor McGregor buys Irish pub where he sucker punched old man

Conor McGregor isn't just returning to the scene of the crime. He's buying it.

The UFC fighter purchased the Marble Arch pub in Dublin, where he once punched an old man over a whiskey dispute, for a price between €1.5 million and €2 million, according to Irish outlet The Currency.

McGregor pleaded guilty to the assault at the Marble Arch in 2019, receiving a fine of €1,000 and avoiding jail time for the incident. His plea included an apology to the man he punched in the head:

“What I did was very wrong and I’d like to apologize again to the injured party and today before the court and assure you that nothing of this nature will happen again,” McGregor said.

McGregor wasn't as contrite after his purchase of the pub was reported, suggesting the victim is now banned from the bar.

At the time of the sucker punch, McGregor had been passing through Marble Arch trying to hawk his new "Proper Twelve" whiskey brand to patrons. When one of them told the fighter that he wasn't a fan of the whiskey, words were exchanged that reportedly included "the Russian battered you," a reference to McGregor's one-sided loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov.

To be fair to the older man who apparently detested McGregor's whiskey, reviews for Proper Twelve have included words such as the following: "tasted like bad whiskey watered down with cheap vanilla extract," "passive and lacking in assertiveness," "another overpriced, dull, one dimensional and bland blend," "smelled like ethanol and tasted only marginally better," "drink something else" and "about as prestigious as his boxing career."

You can imagine that Proper Twelve will now be a significant presence at Marble Arch, though McGregor and his manager did recently sell the brand for a reported $155 million.

McGregor remains scheduled to complete a trilogy against Dustin Poirier, who defeated him via second-round TKO in January, at UFC 264 on July 10. A victory would likely open the door for a shot at the UFC lightweight championship, for which Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler will face off in May.
