Conor McGregor banned from driving for six months over 2017 speeding incident

It’s a good thing Conor McGregor can afford to hire a driver, because he’s going to need one.

According to the Irish Times, the 30-year-old MMA star’s license has been suspended for six months by a court in County Kildare, Ireland over a 2017 speeding incident. He was also instructed to pay a fine amounting to $1,100.

In October 2017, McGregor was issued a citation for driving 95mph (or 154 kilometers per hour) in a zone with a 62mph (100kmh) speed limit. The officer who stopped him told the court that McGregor was alone in his blue Range Rover, and was polite during their five-minute interaction. He told McGregor to drive slower, and McGregor apologized to the officer before driving away.

The conditions that day were dry and the traffic was light, which is why judge Desmond Zaidan was unhappy that McGregor wasn’t charged with a more serious crime — especially given McGregor’s speed at the time and his numerous previous speeding citations. From the Irish Times:

“The higher the speed, the greater the risk involved,” the judge said. “When speeding goes wrong the consequences are catastrophic and life-changing.”

McGregor apologized to the court and told the judge that he wasn’t aware he’d been going that fast. Judge Zaidan acknowledged his apology and said that McGregor seemed genuinely remorseful.

McGregor’s behavior in court on Wednesday was a complete 180 from his behavior in court a year ago. In November 2017, McGregor was due in court on a different speeding charge, but showed up hours late after spending time Instagramming his clothes and shoes. The judge threatened to arrest him when he failed to take any of the court proceedings seriously.

Just because he was contrite in court didn’t mean that McGregor wasn’t game to meet his fans, though. Many had gathered in front of the courthouse on Wednesday, and he took time to take photos and sign autographs before and after the proceedings.
