CONCACAF follows FIFA lead in cancelling two men's youth competitions

Following FIFA's lead, CONCACAF has cancelled its qualifying tournaments for the FIFA U-17 and U-20 Men’s World Cups.

FIFA announced on Dec. 24 that the two tournament, originally planned for 2020 but postponed to 2021 due to the global pandemic, would not take place after all. Indonesia and Peru, which were due to host the events, will now serve as hosts in 2023.

On Monday, CONCACAF formally called off its qualifiers for the two events.

"Given FIFA’s decision, the continued uncertainty regarding the impact of COVID-19 in our own region and concerns regarding youth teams travelling in this environment, CONCACAF has come to the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 CONCACAF Under-17 qualifiers and championship, and the 2020 CONCACAF Under-20 Championship," CONCACAF said in a statement.

CONCACAF covers North and Central America and the Caribbean.
