Apparently Kelly made a good impression. While Kelly is stuck on the depth chart behind Andrew Luck and Jacoby Brissett, it’s still a chance to be on an NFL roster. That’s a positive development for him after Kelly’s time with the Denver Broncos ended in an embarrassing arrest.

Chad Kelly was cut by Denver after arrest

Kelly was seemingly on the verge of getting significant playing time last season as Broncos starter Case Keenum failed to impress. Many Broncos fans clamored for Kelly like he was the answer the franchise has been searching for.

Then it got weird. Kelly was cut following a trespassing arrest after attending a Halloween party with some of his Broncos teammates. After 1 a.m., Kelly entered a residence uninvited and sat down on the couch next to a woman who was holding her young child. According to reports Kelly “mumbled incoherently” and the male homeowner hit Kelly with an aluminum vacuum tube until he left.

Kelly, who was Mr. Irrelevant as the final pick of the 2017 NFL draft, fell in that draft due to some off-field issues from his college days. The Broncos didn’t offer much patience with his odd arrest. There was no guarantee Kelly would get another NFL shot, either.

Colts giving Kelly a shot

The Colts aren’t risking much. Kelly might just be an arm for training camp and preseason. They have one of the best 1-2 quarterback situations in the NFL between Luck and Brissett.

But Kelly, the nephew of Hall-of-Fame quarterback Jim Kelly, does have talent. Had he not screwed up his chance with the Broncos, maybe he’d be on a much different career path.

The Colts can find out over the next few months if Kelly, whose situation is being reviewed by the league for a possible suspension according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, is worth holding on the 53-man roster. In the meantime, Kelly needs to stay out of trouble.
