Colts OL Quenton Nelson to have same foot procedure as Carson Wentz, out 5-12 weeks

The Indianapolis Colts are having a run of bad luck with feet. One day after quarterback Carson Wentz underwent surgery on his foot to correct an injury, the Colts announced that left guard Quenton Nelson has an injury similar to Wentz's, and will be undergoing the same procedure.

Nelson's injury sprung up Monday after having his foot stepped on during practice. He was in a walking boot Tuesday and watched practice from the sideline. Head coach Frank Reich said that Nelson will have the surgery later on Tuesday. Reich also said that while Nelson's injury was triggered by the foot stomp on Monday, it's actually something he was born with.

Just like Wentz, his timeline to return is 5-12 weeks, meaning he could be ready for Week 1, or he could miss as many as six regular-season games.

Nelson's absence will be no small thing for the Colts. The 2018 first-round draft pick has started every game since he was drafted, and has been an All-Pro in all three seasons of his professional career. He's the cornerstone of Indianapolis' offense, and there's really no replacing him — especially since left tackle Eric Fisher is on the PUP list and center Ryan Kelly is out with an elbow injury. With key members of their offensive line out of commission for the time being, the Colts will hope the guys further down on their depth chart can step up and perform.
