Colorado State dismisses 2-year starter Preston Hodges

A veteran of Colorado State’s secondary is no longer with the team.

According to the Loveland Reporter Herald, Rams senior defensive back Preston Hodges was dismissed from the team after being ruled academically ineligible.

Hodges has been a starter for CSU since arriving in Fort Collins in 2014 following a year at Bakersfield Community College. In his first year with the program, Hodges played in all 13 games and made 12 starts at nickel cornerback. He totaled 69 tackles, three tackles for loss, seven pass breakups, two forced fumbles and one interception.

He started eight more games for the Rams in 2015 and finished the season with 29 tackles. The 5-foot-11, 200-pound Hodges moved to safety during spring practice and was expected to be a veteran presence on a secondary that lost its other three 2015 starters to graduation.

Justin Sweet, another candidate to start in the CSU secondary, was arrested earlier this month for drunk driving. Sweet, a redshirt junior, was listed as the team’s starting strong safety coming out of spring practice. His status with the program is unknown.
