Cody McKenzie Drops to Featherweight, Chad Mendes His First Challenge

Cody McKenzie was slated to face Aaron Riley at UFC on Fuel TV 3 on May 15 in Virginia, but plans have changed.

He didn’t say why, but McKenzie on Tuesday announced via his Twitter account that he will now be facing Octagon newcomer Marcus Levesseur instead.

“I will be fighting May 15th. I was fighting a good banger, Aaron Riley; now I’m fighting a good wrestler in Marcus Levesseur,” wrote McKenzie.

McKenzie (12-2) had been on a remarkable streak, winning all 12 of his fights through The Ultimate Fighter Season 12 Finale. Of those 12 victories, he submitted 11 of his opponents by way of guillotine choke.

He has fallen on hard times recently, losing back-to-back bouts to Yves Edwards and Vagner Rocha. So McKenzie is in desperate need of a win when he steps in with Levesseur at the Patriot Center in Fairfax.

Levesseur (21-5) has the pressures of the first-time under the bright lights of the UFC on his shoulders, but coming in as a late replacement, he doesn’t have the same pressure of his UFC tenure being on the bubble.

McKenzie vs. Levesseur will serve as part of the undercard in support of UFC on Fuel TV 3 headliners Dustin Poirier and Chan Sung Jung, aka The Korean Zombie.
