Clarke MacArthur will not suit up for the Ottawa Senators this season after suffering a concussion in September, GM Pierre Dorion announced on Friday.

“Clarke is devastated by this news,” Dorion said. “He felt he didn’t have any symptoms but I think in the long-term of this process we always said that the doctors would decide if Clarke was going to play.”

“They all feel that Clarke should not play this year.”

The 31-year-old MacArthur has not played an NHL game since Oct. 14, 2015 when he suffered a concussion in a game against the Columbus Blue Jackets. During a training camp scrimmage in September, MacArthur took a hit from Patrick Sieloff, which caused him to suffer a fourth concussion in 18 months.

In October, MacArthur told reporters that while he was still experiencing symptoms, he was feeling better and had even started skating again, eventually taking part in full contact drills. He also added that despite his history of concussions he wasn’t ready to retire just yet.

“I’m going to set up a landscaping company at some point here, but not yet, so I’m going to keep going,” MacArthur said.

There was hope that MacArthur would return this season, with even Dorion admitting he believed the forward would play again, but doctors ruled against that and now we wait to see if this also means the end of his career.

MacArthur, who has played 548 NHL games with four teams, is signed through the end of the 2019-20 season. He’s currently on long-term injured reserve and his contract, according to Bruce Garrioch, will be covered by insurance.
