cyclist who use that all year round, motorists need to know that there's going to be a lot of new cyclists out there that aren't familiar with the may not be familiar with the rules of the road or what to do, so it's important to keep our eyes out for them just in case as well. >> Yeah, and a quick note for pedestrians out there too. Obviously staying alert if you're in a crosswalk. I mean, don't put too much trust in it 100. >> Right? Absolutely. I mean, we have the rules out there and we expect vehicles to do that. But every now and again, you know, that may not happen. And certainly if you're using marked crosswalks, it's going to be, you know, a little better for you. Like I say you have those advanced warning. You have lights. The things that help to advise motorists that you're going to be crossing the road. So certainly. But if you get to spots where you can't do your best, that old adage look both ways before you cross the road. If you can catch eye contact and make sure that vehicle saves you, it sees you, then you know you're going to be safer when you're crossing the streets. >> Okay, let's talk about stunting for a second, because I don't know if it's just me or not, but we're reading and seeing a lot more reports on stunting. Is it just me or is it kind of on the rise around hrm right now? >> Well, I don't know specifically the statistics and how that's going to sit as far as numbers on the rise, and I don't think it really is on the rise as far as what's actually occurring. But certainly you are seeing more information from us in relation to it because we are trying to advise motorists that we are out there. We are stopping individuals, we are looking for you and I say, and this happens throughout hrm like I say, are both our traffic officers and our patrol officers as well are looking for that because we know that speeding, especially to that extreme, is very dangerous. >> And so like from the reports that I read sometimes and not every single time, but it's usually like a young person and a very expensive vehicle. Is there any way to like, maybe charge more for the ticket or something? Because money may not be an object when you're driving a mercedes i8 or whatever it was on the 103. >> Right. And part of that is a, you know, and there is no specific age group or vehicles. Certainly we've we've issued tickets to every variety of vehicle and driver, both age groups and genders. As far as that goes. However, it's part of the reason why we seize your vehicle, and that's one of one of the penalties with that as well. So, where cost may not be a deterrent for some people, losing your vehicle for a period of time certainly can be. So that's one of the reasons that that increased penalty is in there for throughout the province. >> All right. Well that's it for time for this morning. But we hope everyone has a good safe spring and summer season. And john always good to have you on the show. Thanks so much for coming in. >> Glad to be here. Well, halifax police say they are investigating a weapons offense in dartmouth now after shots were fired into a parked car recently. Police say several shots were fired at the car. This was on valkyrie crescent. No injuries were reported. A man was arrested, though moments later and will appear in dartmouth provincial court at some time today. Now, police did not say when the incident occurred, but we'll have more updates on this story as they become available to us today. The government of nova scotia has its eye on a regional park in bedford as the site of a new housing development. Sandy lake has been a protected area since 1971, but now plans are underway to build at its headwaters. Ella macdonald met up with a sandy lake conservation coalition to learn what's at risk should the development move forward. >> Nestled just off hammonds plains road in bedford, you can find sandy lake, a 1000 acre ecosystem home to an old growth forest and endangered species. The area was identified as a protected park back in 1971, but now the head of the lake is proposed for development. Co-chair of the sandy lake conservation coalition karen robinson wants the 6000 proposed units to be built elsewhere because it's just as important, if not more important today with things like climate change and biodiversity loss threatening our very existence on earth, there's even more reason to keep this gem. The halifax regional municipality has drafted a land suitability analysis for the development, but so far a coalition members say the draft is inadequate. >> Two things that are not addressed is flooding. So how would development above the lake affect flooding, including on the sackville river? So that's a really high risk question that is not answered so far. And the other one is water quality. >> In a statement, housing minister john lohr says as a province, we are working to create a future where nova scotians, our economy and nature can thrive. At the same time, nova scotia is in the midst of a housing crisis. Working together, we can ensure sustainable development that will provide nova scotians with the homes they need while protecting the environment. >> And we do need a lot more housing in halifax and there are areas that are much better for it. But this is the kind of development that we don't need that leads to more traffic and more pollution and destroys some of the last large wild areas that are in the city. As a deep blue lake, sandy lake is free of algae blooms and is a healthy habitat for salmon to cool off, according to hrm. >> The draft report examines habitat for species and risks and notes that watercourses in the area are travel routes for atlantic salmon. However mckendry says this wasn't addressed properly. >> I think ultimately sandy lake will show whether the province and the minister of housing are going to use evidence to make their decision about sandy lake, and not all the information is available here yet, or whether their agenda is really suburban sprawl at all costs. >> Ella macdonald, "global news, halifax prime minister justin trudeau was in truro on friday to highlight the universal coverage of various contraception and diabetes medications. >> He announced that the federal government is launching the first phase of a national pharmacare plan, with $1.5 billion in federal funding under that plan, medications and devices, including insulin birth control pills and iuds will be free for canadians. The president of the nova scotia nurses union janet hazelton, says coverage for contraception and diabetes is crucial for those without a drug plan. >> We see far too many patients come to us leaving our emergency departments or leaving their family doctors or nurse practitioners with prescriptions for medications to treat their diabetes, whether it's insulin or oral medication, only to know that they are not getting that prescription filled because they can't afford it. These patients inevitably land back in the system, requiring more intensive health care like an amputation, hazelton says. >> Nurses across the country hope to see more medications covered by the federal pharmacare program, an aviation program in halifax has started up again for its seventh year running. Dream wings is a nonprofit organization that takes children with special needs on the flight of a lifetime. Global's ella macdonald went along for a ride in the dream wings aircraft. >> Dimitri neonakis is a seasoned pilot. He's been flying more than 25 years, but his favorite flights by far have been with children like 11 year old chloe paul howlett, who has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair. I'm a little choked

up, to see chloe. >> She reached out to me, grabbed my hand on my elbow. That's her saying thank you. She's nonverbal. You saw her. And, that's what makes me come back. >> In june 2017, neonakis founded dream wings, a free aviation program dedicated to children with special needs. One of those kids is 12 year old mckenzie crannach. >> I want to see clouds. How houses, towns, neighbours yeah. >> And are you scared at all? >> No, I'm not. Not nervous. Nope. I am feeling great. >> Another dream wings passenger is 12 year old jason slocum, who lives with a rare disorder called kabuki syndrome. What are you gonna see when you're up in the sky today, mommy, I might see my boy and how fast chloe answers. >> I might see them. I might see him. I don't know, neonakis says. >> Not only is dream wings a once in a lifetime experience for kids, but for some parents as well, especially those whose children need full time care to for them to get a phone call and say, hey, come to the airport, let's spend a couple of hours together on the ground and in the air and do something unique. >> Is wonderful for them. They take a good break from their medical duties after coming down from the clouds. >> Crannach says her mom was scared, but she was brave enough for the both of them. >> I say mom really scared. Hold my hand. >> Now in its seventh year, dream wings has done more than 750 flights and flown over 1000 children. >> Give a child an opportunity that like this, is, is priceless to me. >> Ella macdonald, "global news" enfield. >> And let's say good morning and happy monday, I guess to ross hull. Good morning ross. >> Happy monday paul I know you're an avid biker. I was able to get out there over the weekend, which was great. It's always nice to be able to do those types of things that we enjoy over the weekend. And it wasn't necessarily biking, but it was walking that you were up to yesterday. >> Yeah, exactly. I was in lower sackville for the annual ms walks, so thanks to all the volunteers and organizers and the walkers who took part in nearly 200 walkers, ross and almost $80,000 raised for, you know, hoping for a future to end. Ms. So it was a real positive, powerful experience. So a great time in lower sackville at a beautiful park called acadia park. And the rain just started when the walk ended, so that was a pretty good timing. >> I'm happy to hear. And I of course I made sure that was all the way unfolded. Paul, I'm glad that you got the event in without a major downpour, and we're going to stay mainly dry across the area today. We do have some wet weather though, in the forecast. More towards tomorrow, and I'll talk about that in a moment as we take a look at a wider perspective. You can see relatively quiet. Sure, some mist and fog for some this morning that should clear out, although I do expect us to be into mostly cloudy conditions by the afternoon as that disturbance starts to advance. But a closer look is seeing not much going on when it comes to precipitation. A southeast wind. Currently, we'll get into a bit more of a southwesterly wind over the next 24 hours or so, and we're starting off with temperatures in the high single digits, low double digits for most, although we're in the mid single digits this morning around places like sydney. Good morning to you. There as we look at your forecast conditions today, 13 to 15 degrees around the hrm 17 is the normal or average high. So a little cooler than average. We'll get up to the low 20s high teens as we head through most areas in new brunswick. So let's take a look at how it works. There's the cloud cover. This afternoon. Then we're watching out for this boundary that's going to move through bringing the potential for some showers. Some thunderstorms could be some heavier downpours. With this of course we do need the rain. It's been quite dry, but we don't need heavy rain in a short amount of time, so we'll have to watch out for that. Most of this now should clear out by wednesday and then there will be the chance of more showers developing at times. Next week. Rainfall amounts at this point look to be in the 15 to 20 millimeter range for most, although locally this could be 25 plus millimeters. If we do get into those heavier thunderstorms. So unsettled tomorrow. High of 19 in fredericton. Then we see temperatures rise back up with sunshine 23 on wednesday into the high teens thursday and friday. Low 20s for this upcoming weekend. Wet weather on tuesday for the hrm 20 on wednesday. The chance of some showers on thursday. At this point, though, looking ahead to the weekend, temperatures ranging just around average at 17 with the sun cloud mix and that's a look at ok tire weather total pollen counts are high across the area on this monday. Bit of a change in terms of what the high counts are, though. This morning is for pine, fir and spruce. >> And that's a look at your local news headlines on this monday edition of our show. Right back with a check of national and international news on "global" news morning.
