Christian McCaffrey has another dominating performance in win against USC

Christian McCaffrey continues to have Southern Cal’s number.

The Stanford running back amassed 238 yards rushing and receiving, and two touchdowns to help lead the Cardinal to a 27-10 win over the Trojans. The Cardinal have now won seven of nine against the Trojans, which is the best nine-game stretch for the school in the 111-year history of the series.

McCaffrey now has 702 rushing and receiving yards in his last three games against USC.

McCaffrey struck first when he was left wide open on a busted coverage down the left sideline, which allowed him to scamper 56 yards untouched into the end zone. He scored the Cardinal’s second touchdown on a 1-yard run on fourth down late in the second quarter to give Stanford a 17-3 halftime lead.

And while USC answered out of halftime with a nine-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a Ronald Jones 1-yard score, Stanford didn’t let the Trojans get any closer. They closed the door after that with a 56-yard reverse by Michael Rector for a score.

Stanford then used its running game to milk the clock and seal the game.

USC’s loss also might have created a quarterback controversy. Starter Max Browne was pulled in the fourth quarter in favor of Sam Darnold. Darnold did get the Trojans’ offense moving and had a potential touchdown late, but his pass into the end zone took a wild bounce and landed into the waiting arms of Noor Davis to essentially end the game.

USC is now 1-2 to start the season for the first time since 2000, which was Pete Carroll’s first season as head coach.
