Hundreds of families still under rubble in freezing temperatures, Syrian opposition rescuers say

Tuesday 7 February 2023 16:40 , Michael Jones

Time is running out to save hundreds of families still trapped under the rubble of destroyed buildings after yesterday’s devastating earthquake, the head of the Syrian opposition-run civil defence service has said.

Attempts to reach survivors were also impeded by temperatures below freezing and close to 200 aftershocks, which made the search through unstable structures perilous.

Raed al-Saleh told Reuters urgent help was needed from international groups for the rescue effort by the organisation known as the White Helmets in rebel-held northwest Syria, where hundreds were killed and injured.

“Every second means saving lives and we call on all humanitarian organisations to give material aid and respond to this catastrophe urgently,” he said.

‘They’re saying help us, but nobody is coming’: The race to save trapped victims of Turkey’s earthquake

Tuesday 7 February 2023 16:00 , Michael Jones

Rescue teams are battling rain, snow and falling temperatures – sometimes digging with their bare hands through rubble – in a race against time to find survivors of the devastating earthquakes that have killed thousands across Turkey and Syria.

Search teams from all over the world, as well as almost 25,000 rescue workers from Turkey, have spread out across the hundreds of miles of the country that have been flattened by the tremors – with thousands of buildings having collapsed. The same is true of the regions across Syria, both government-held regions and those overseen by opposition forces with the country in a civil war that has lasted more than a decade.

The weather, plus ruined roads and devastated villages, towns and cities, have meant that many areas have been left without help so far. Residents have been forced to try and dig their relatives out of the buildings that fell around them. Those trapped have been calling out, or sending messages via phone to give a sense of their location.

War-ravaged Syria is calling on the United Nations and all member states to help with rescue efforts, health services, shelter and food aid following a massive earthquake that killed thousands in Syria and Turkey.

The quake-damaged area in Syria is divided between government-held territory and the country’s last opposition-held enclave, which is surrounded by government forces and borders Turkey.

Syria’s U.N. Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh told reporters the U.N. secretary-general “assured us that the U.N. will do all it’s possible in helping Syria in this very difficult situation.” Sabbagh said he had delivered a letter to Guterres from the country’s foreign minister requesting help.

Sabbagh was asked whether Syria would agree to allow the U.N. to deliver aid through other crossing points from Turkey, if that is feasible. He didn’t respond directly, but said the government is ready to help and coordinate aid deliveries “to all Syrians in all territory of Syria.”

The rebel-held territory has depended on a flow of aid from nearby Turkey for everything from food to medical supplies.

South Korea will dispatch a 60-person search and rescue team and also send medical supplies.

In announcing the plan Tuesday, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol described Turkey as a “brother nation” that sent troops to fight alongside South Korea during the 1950-53 Korean War. Turkey lost more than 700 of its forces in action.

Jeon Ha Gyu, spokesperson of South Korea’s Defense Ministry, said the ministry was arranging plans with related agencies to mobilize military aircraft to transport the rescue workers and aid supplies.

“It’s an obvious decision to help our brother nation Turkey to deal with this pain and difficulty,” Yoon said during a Cabinet meeting. “An incident involving such enormous casualties is more than just a disaster of a certain nation and should be seen as an international disaster, and the international society should fully perform its duty and responsibility.”
