UPDATE:Bicyclist killed by DUI suspect east of Clovis named. Suspect faces manslaughter charge

A suspected DUI driver struck and killed a bicyclist Wednesday night near Clovis then fled to his home, according to California Highway Patrol.

CHP spokesman Mike Salas said the crash happened around 7 p.m. on Herndon Avenue, just east of Locan Avenue.

The adult male rider was going west on Herndon when he was struck from behind by the pickup.

The pickup truck driver reportedly fled the scene but was arrested at his home, CHP added.

Salas said the driver, identified Thursday by CHP as 36-year-old Jonathan Petty of Clovis, failed to assist the fallen rider and fled to his home, a short distance away.

There, Salas said “uninvolved parties” called 911 and reported his location.

Officers determined that Petty was under the influence of alcohol.

He was taken into custody and transported to Community Regional Medical Center for a further evaluation before being booked into Fresno County Jail.

The area where the fatal collision occurred often has cars traveling at high speeds while on narrow roads.

The cyclist’s identity had not been released by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office as of noon Wednesday.
